Fall Ball Rules

  • All games are played as double-headers (except tee-ball or where otherwise indicated on the schedule).

  • Teams alternate home/away for the 2 games.

  • ALWAYS discuss rules with the opposing coach to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Fall ball is comprised of teams from different leagues and many new faces to coaching.

  • Games are 5 innings, no new innings after 1 hr and 45 minutes (AAA & above), 1hr 15 of play for coach pitch. Tee Ball should be 45 mins. The second game should begin no longer than 2 hours after the start of the first game.

  • Game rules and bat rules per the little league rule book. LLI Rules/App

  • Teams are to use round robin batting so every player in attendance is in the batting order of the entire game.

  • Teams are to use free defensive substitutions.

  • Coaches are encouraged to rotate positions on the field to encourage development of every player. Fall ball was designed to be a fun addition to the competitive spring/summer seasons, we want kids to learn and strengthen their abilities.

  • 5 run limit/inning for coach pitch & AAA kid pitch. The last inning will be dependent on the coaches decision. Discuss unlimited runs in the last inning with the other coach (and umpire) BEFORE the game begins. If it isn’t decided before the game then the 5 run limit is in effect for the whole game including the last.

  • AAA Kid Pitch (9-10U) 46/60' field - Runners may NOT lead off and may steal only after the ball crosses the plate.

  • Majors (11-12U) 46/60' field - Runners may NOT lead off and may steal only after the ball crosses the plate.

  • Intermediate (11U-13U) 50/70'  field - Runners may lead off and steal any time.

  • Pitcher can pitch 6 consecutive outs per game (kid pitch-10U & majors-12U). Intermediate (11U-13U) & Juniors/Seniors (13-15U) pitcher can pitch 9 consecutive outs per game. Pitchers can return to pitch in the second game.

  • Pitcher may return to the game as the catcher even if he/she has pitched their max innings.

  • Current Little League International rules apply in all other scenarios, including bat use and safety equipment.

  • Always consult with the opposing coach to ensure that your teams are on the same page prior to starting the game.

N4 Rules for Coach Pitch

Tee-Ball

Always consult with the opposing coach to ensure that your teams are on the same page prior to starting the game.

  • All players on the field while on defense. Tee ball players should only sit the bench if they are unwilling to participate.

  • A batted round of all players on offense completes the at bat for the team.

  • No outs are awarded. The primary goal is to teach kids which direction to run when they hit the ball, where to bring the ball while on defense, and above all, to help them learn to love the game! The last at bat clears the field with a "home run".

  • Games should last roughly 45 minutes and teams should be cleared from the dugouts within an hour.

Inclement weather/field conditions: In the event of rain or other inclement weather, decisions will be made by the host fields regarding field conditions and whether games should be played. We strive to make these decisions by 9am but we all know that Michigan weather can change quickly so we try not to cancel games unless it's painfully clear that we won't be able to play. An email will be sent to all coaches in the event of cancellations. Facebook (Northern Little League Grand Rapids) will be updated as well.  Because we are at several locations, it is possible that some fields will be cancelled but others may not.

Due to the timeline for fall ball, we are unable to reschedule cancelled games but coaches are welcome to reach out to their scheduled opponent and set up a scrimmage at their convenience.
